  • Welcome to How to Out Fish Your Dad

Hi my name is Sean and this is my blog to share photos and stories of my latest fishing adventures. I started my fishing adventures with dad in the the rivers and ocean around Darwin in the quest to catch big fish mainly Barramundi. Now located in the Gladstone region I would like you all to share in my fishing adventures on the reefs and rivers of Central Queensland and continue in my quest to out fishing my dad.

Heron, Birds and Barra

Last week of school and I was lucky enough to have a family trip out to Heron Island. We spent most of our time snorkeling at Heron. But dad and I did manage to check out the Turtles laying at night time. Heron was full of bird life and great snorkeling.

Some Video of Heron.

After we got back Heron we headed up to Nan and Pa’s at Hideaway Bay. There was lots of Lorikeets at Nan and Pa’s so I managed a couple of shots when I stole dad’s camera off him. The Lorikeets are cheeky and live on there patio.

As an early Christmas present dad and I got a fishing trip with Andysfishing to Peter Faust Dam to chase some big barra. It was hard fishing and plenty of casting and heaps of tree catching by dad. I end up landing the first barra which was new PB at 90cm and caught in the sticks. Dad finally land a fish as well which went 101cm.

_MG_7083_MG_7088_MG_7091_MG_7095  We got a few tips from Andy on how to fish the dams. Dad and I plan to fish Awoonga soon and I will catch my metery and out fish my dad.

Reef to Rivers

Over the last 6 weeks Dad and I have managed to get out on the reefs with good weather and up the rivers when it was windy. On our first trip out to the reef we explored the area around Masthead, Wistari and and wreck we found. A lot of fish caught on this trip but only small. I did manage Trevally Remora and Red Throat Emperor.

Our next trip was an over night trip out to Fitzroy Reef. As the trip before lots of small fish around. We saw heaps of whales jumping in the distance. I did get my first Coral trout and Squid on this trip. We spent the night in Fitzroy Lagoon then the next morning head to Lamont Reef where we managed a feed of Hussar and Task Fish.

Our final reef trip was out to Northwest and Masthead Island. Very quite around Northwest and a bit choppy so we headed back in behind Masthead. This was a great choice as I landed my first Red Emperor, Chinaman and Maori Cod. The Red Emperor weighed in at 8.5kg’s and 76cm

When the wind was up we did a trip to the Colosseum and Boyne River. We caught a few nice flat head and some small trevally.

It has been a pretty good 6 weeks of fishing and on the last reef trip I flogged Dad. So get out there and out fish your dad.

Gladstone Reefs

Today Dad, Rod and I headed out around Mast Head and Wistari  Reefs of Gladstone for a morning fish. On the way out we came across some Tuna but unfortunately not hooks up on the lure. We pulled up at some shoals between the reefs and started having a drift. Dad caught a small Red Throat emperor straight away. I was on to a nice fish next. This was a good fight and turned out to be a nice shark. Dad did film the fish but stuffed up with pushing the wrong buttons so no video for this trip.  Rod then hook a shark around 5 to 6 foot long before being snapped off. After I caught a small tusk fish, a visit from a sea gull(mine, mine ,mine) and loosing all our other fish to sharks we headed off to another spot.

We had a run along the edge of Wistari reef where I through around some homemade poppers. I had had a couple of hits from Coral Trout but again no hook ups.

Back out between some more shoals where we managed to catch  feed of Red Throat, Tusk Fish and dad got 2 Coral Trout. I also landed my first Mother in Law fish. Unfortunately no fish of the trout to busy trying to catch some more. We ended up letting heaps of small one go and had fun landing fish all morning.

Time to head home. We saw dolphins and Dungeons on the way home. Heaps of bait around so dad and I will need another trip out to chase some pelagics when we have time. Then I can out fish my dad again.

Shark Frenzy

Dad and I had our first out in the big boat today. We started to head out to Rock Cod Shoal but was getting a bit rough for my first trip out. With a change in course we headed to a hole at the back of Tide Island. We anchored up in the middle of the hole and dropped down our baits. Dad was the first one to hook up and in came our first shark.  Then it was my turn for the next one, another shark. Dad dropped down and was on again, this time a baby Hammer Head._34T0239-3_34T0243I dropped back down and I was on again but this time it was a small jewfish. I put it back but while it was swimming of a sea eagle flew down and grabbed it.

Time to try and catch a big jewie. Back onto another fish which turned out to be another shark.

After a few more sharks it was time to try somewhere else. We headed of to  Jennylyn reef. We pulled up on the edge and straight away dad caught a spangled emperor. My next fish as another shark, this time a Wobbegong  Shark. Dad then landed a Leather Jacket and I landed my biggest Moon Fish (Bat Fish). We ended up landing some small cod and dad got a nice mother in law fish. Starting to get windy by now so it was time to home.

Next time round hopefully some good weather and a trip to the Islands and out fish my dad.
